I can't believe this. I was using stumble upon to mouch round the net and i came upon a site that supposedly infected me with a trojan virus. I figured that i'd just navigate away from the page and everything would be fine but this program has suddenly appeared on my computer. It pops up every few minutes to tell me i'm infected (well duh) but it's obviously a virus that has been developed by this supposed virus remover program. Why would i pay someone $49 to remove a virus that they so obviously put on my computer in the first place!! Has anyone else been roped into this scam? I'd like to get rid of all of it but AVG seems to be incapable of removing either, grrr! π π π

Originally posted by rogueboyMarinkatomb, I think it could be the smithfraud virus. I had it not long ago. Don't click on that link to their product it usually sends a Trojan to reproduce the virus when you do, it's all part of the scam is to sell you a non existent removal tool. Google the Software name they are selling and you can read about the hoax and what to do about it. .

There's a few of them:
WinFixer, WinAntivirus, DriveCleaner, ErrorSafe, and XP Antivirus (probably amongst others)

Aha! Got it sorted. I downloaded 'Super anti-spyware' free edition. It removed a load of other stuff that has obviously been there for ages too. Nice little app, free is always the way to the future... π

For the last few months I've been running AVG antivirus with antispyware (free edition) and killing the caches every few days with ccleaner. This seems to be working for me so far.....
It's ALWAYS worth running Spybot occasionally though - those guys seem to pick up a lot more of the obscure stuff than the mainstream products.
Every few months I do a Spybot download-update-scan-uninstall sequence just to have a look.
I had Copy-book malware a few weeks ago and tried lots of software to remove it. Nothing was finding it, but all of my browsing was being redirected through its preferred sites, and I couldn't update AVG.
Tried AVG again on Monday and it updated at last, also no sign of Copy-book now. I don't know what happened to it, but it's gone. π

You can get onecare for 90 day free, and it is pretty effective.
