Well considering how completely useless they are at making secure software i'm sure the competition are shaking in their boots...

I actually use Windows live onecare, and spybot.

You can get onecare for 90 day free, and it is pretty effective.
I tried all sorts of things, such as AVAST, AVG (as it was when I got the malware because I couldn't update), Spybot, Rogue Remover etc, next was going to be Hijackthis. If that failed I was going to format my hard drive.

None of the above programmes found the Copy-book malware. I looked at lots of websites and in forums, but there didn't seem to be a definate cure for this one.

Did you actually post a question in one of the better security forums, like http://www.wilderssecurity.com/index.php
or
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/

they would deal with it; no problemo.

How did you cure it in the end?

Once again, you open your mouth and subtract from the sum total of human knowledge.
Spybot has a fairly poor GUI, and the RTP application can be intrusive - but the scanner is still about the best in the business.
Unless you know of better?
They used to be just about the only show in town 6 years ago but others have surpassed them like Spy Sweeper, which is not free but is one heck of a lot stronger. The thing about these programs though is none of them kill everything and if you use two or three you get better results than using just one. There is a site that tests out AV to see which ones are rogue ware, like this site:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
BTW, Adaware is one program like spybot that has a free version. Also try Trojan Hunter, you can get a month free use, it is very good at getting trojans.
Spywarewarrior, I notice has not has an update since 2007 so not sure if it is being maintained anymore but there may be others more up to date. They search out for rouge ware, anti spy ware that is really a virus or trojan.

You know i'm pretty much certain most of the developers of these apps write malware to boost business. Some are blatant, some are subtle, but i have no doubt in my mind if they play online chess they're all engine users...

One of the many forums I read was on bleepingcomputer. No useful suggestions there.
I'm not sure what happened, but it has suddenly stopped redirecting me on Google searches, and I have now been able to update AVG and run that. I can't find any sign of copy-book on my pc and everything is rumming well again.
