Buy AVG. It costs less than Norton, and runs faster.

Once, AVG failed to remove a trojan that it found on my computer. Fortunately, I'm also running McAfee.

AVG is fine.

I use it with spywareblaster (also free) available from

http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/

and spybot (also free) available from

http://www.kolla.de/

Can't you just download the updates from Symantec for free manually anyways? Thats what I do but.. I'm using the main program from my work., so not sure if that could be the difference.. is it you won't get the def files anymore? or the problem will nag and not work anymore

I would just use McAfee. I would also recomend getting a firewall. that is what I have and I never have a problem and I am always connected to the internet.

Same here.

Also, you can do online virus scans free as well, eg Trendmicro or Panda.

One thing, I would remove Norton stuff completely first before running another AV program.

I use AVG but have it set up so that the control panel doesn't load at start-up. I don't use the e-mail scanner either as my ISP scans everything. AVG scans automatically every day and downloads updates too. I occasionally check it against Trend-micro's online scan.
I use Zone Alarm, but it's getting a bit slow on start-up, might switch to something else.
I use Lava-soft's product for spyware.
This set-up works for me as I've never had a problem, your mileage may vary.

PS: My ISP uses Postini anti-spam software so spam isn't a problem here.
