Cheers Crowley!

I haven't tried to create a spreadsheet, database or "word" document with it yet but it looks like it'll do that. If it doesn't then fair enough, it worked fine for what I needed.
OO should cater for most of your home and small office suite needs.
Some formatting, graphs etc. aren't as sharp as MSO can do, and you might lose a little formatting when opening especially the new MSO formats, but as a free piece of software it punches far above its weight.

Glad I could help.
Spread the word, brother!

Why would you do that, when you can get legal replacement open source software for free?

OpenOffice installs without a hitch and works just as well as MSO 90% of the time - even quicker than MSO if you just need the basics - there just isn't VBA support and some formatting doesn't look as sharp as in MSO.
because of the reasons you say

- that other thing doesnt seem to work 10% of the time
- i already know how to work with MSO, dont feel like figuring out other programs
- i dont only need the basics, sometimes i use more 'advanced' options.
- besides, why wouldnt i download a hacked version for free? MSO seems to have enough bread to eat, and the chance ill be caught with it seems...really small🙂

Right. So I captured your IP using my hacked cross-browser script I infected
this site with some two weeks ago, and I've sent it along to MS. They
should come knocking any time now. Still a chance for you to choose the
OO option though, if you don't want to be fined ridiculously for a marginally
better office suite.

Fair enough.

The only people who won't benefit from OO are people who :
- actually program VBA into MSO files - the OO macros seem to work fine.
- need spectacular* graphs
- need to make many spectacular* PowerPoint presentations

That's why most home and small offices will benefit greatly from OpenOffice.

I purposefully used the word 'spectacular' here, because these functions aren't as good as the MSO counterparts. The OO graphs and presentations are good - you just can't use it to make them great.

My point is that I managed to miss your edit (though miraculously it was
included in my post). 🙁

Addition: Though, on closer inspection, I disagree with not being
able to make great presentations and graphs. Perhaps not as excellent as
MS Office (perhaps) but certainly not not great.

I use Ubuntu but its not a panacea for all ills, there are other distros. This thread should be titled "want to try out Ubuntu" not "want to try out linux". Other distros include :-

- Debian
- OpenSuse
- Fedora
- Mandriva

I don't want to accuse you of cheating but even on old hardware Linux perfoms better than windows. I would say ure uni people are running XP on computers certified for windows 95.

No, this thread title is perfect.
Ubuntu is currently the perfect place for a not very tech savvy person to go and try out LINUX.

I don't want to have yet another thread about *nix distro usage, pros and cons.
Ubuntu is not perfect, but it works well, installs VERY safely and easily and won't scare any person who has grown up under the protective, stifling blanket that is M$...
