Get the great, free guide:

Get Ubuntu:
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu
(Optional - if you downloaded the Ubuntu package as an ISO file) Get ISOBurn to quickly and easily burn the file to a CD which you can use to boot from:
http://isoburn.sourceforge.net/download.html
This is not necessary if you know how to burn ISO CDs with your current software.
Stick the CD in your CD/DVD drive and just reboot. You can boot off this CD and will be able to check out Ubuntu without installing anything.
If you like what you see, you may consider actually installing on your hard drive - the Ubuntu installation will set up dual booting, so you will get a menu on startup to select either Ubuntu or Windows.
Check out the guide for details.

Is it just that you get a warm feeling telling Microsoft to run and jump?
I was thinking of it a while ago as I didn't get MS Office on this laptop (cost) and thought there may be better ways of spending the money.
I've drank the beer now that I bought with the money I saved and am now Officeless. Is it the way forward.
Great, thanks for cluttering up the thread with your inane chatter...
Anyhoo, I'm a Windows user and won't switch quickly. Ubuntu is just a great economic choice for an old, unused PC - if you have one lying around and want to give it a new lease on life.
Ubuntu is not the way to go if you want to game or use very specific software.
Ubuntu is very easy to install and play around with, if you are that way inclined...
RE: Office
You don't need MS Office, as you can download OpenOffice or StarOffice, that both work pretty well on Windows. StarOffice is not free though, but MUCH cheaper than MSO...
If you are a big VBA user/developer like me, then only MS Office will do, but OpenOffice will open any basic MS Office file with little fuss.

at my uni they have some computers with Linux on it.
They are slower then the windows computers (and windows isnt really fast either;( ), and firefox often crashes on it:/

Thanks for that, seems like what I'd find useful I'll take a look at those.

my idea of linux is that its for ppl who know alot about computers, since its more easy to code in and stuff (ive heard).
and, well, i did kinda expect it to normaly run firefox, whitch it cant, really crashes ALOT, like every 5 min...and i dont even browse for porn at uni;(

Linux was traditionally only for the tech-savvy, but it's very much matured into a great desktop replacement that anyone can use.
It's not easier to code in Linux than Windows.
If your university PCs with Linux on are crashing this much, then Linux was installed by an idiot or the hardware is failing. I wouldn't blame the OS.

OpenOffice installs without a hitch and works just as well as MSO 90% of the time - even quicker than MSO if you just need the basics - there just isn't VBA support and some formatting doesn't look as sharp as in MSO.

I just wanted to use this computer to look at a few things and it's done that no probs.
Cheers Crowley!
I haven't tried to create a spreadsheet, database or "word" document with it yet but it looks like it'll do that. If it doesn't then fair enough, it worked fine for what I needed.
