Hi All,

Joe 285 here with a second installment of Mr.700's bowling clinic. This week, we are going to cover simple etiquette when it comes to bowling. To keep up with the course, please review last week's course on "Curve" but this current lesson does not depend on the last one.

In league play or in open bowling play, there should be a common courtesy observed when someone bowling direclty adjacent to you on either side is on the approach ready to bowl. Let that bowler complete their throw and then, when it clear on either side of you, go ahead and step onto the approach. You will often find it takes a great deal of concentration when attempting to aim for your shot and that could be disrupted if you catch someone in your peripheral vision. In tournament play, there is often a two lane courtesy that is strictly observed.

Also try to be aware of open containers in the common congregational area while awaiting your turn. Often times a mishap can occur and a sticky beverage can accidently spill. This can be quite disastrous if anything should get on the soles of your bowling shoes.

Happy Bowling and remember,

The path of the well oiled lane leads to contentment....

So if someone breaks lane etiquete is it permissable to adopt the manners of Walter Sobchak?

Let's get into more detail here...

How do you handle it when someone walks up when you are ready to throw? Lets say you are at the line, start to make a move and someone walks up on you breaking any semblance of concentration you might have had! First, you might want to try and stop. Chances are, if you noticed them... you can stop. STOP!

Now you turn around and give them a look. If they are on a team with a REAL BOWLER like Joe or me... a teammate will tell them what they did wrong. You don't need to say anything yet, and it is part of etiquette to not say anything yet.

So, you've done that. You are ready to bowl again, and as you get ready the same guy gets up to bowl right next to you! Now you can say something if you like. 'You really shouldn't be up here while I'm bowling, it is common courtesy'. You don't need to blast them, embarrass them, or anything. Just let them know.

Now if it happens again, you get to go ballistic! 'Dude, are you in a rush? Go ahead, I want to watch you choke'. You may be as rude as you see fit, but please look around the lanes for women, children, and old people... You might be right, but don't go nuts with a cuss storm around these kinds of people. I guess you shouldn't blast an old lady either, just beg her to give you a little time at the line... or wait for her to go since you know she's a 'sideler'.

Here are some more tips on etiquette.

Be ready to throw when it is your turn

Get off the lanes quickly as you can

Don't block the ball return with your towel so the balls pile up

Move the balls gently if they begin to pile up... no one wants you smacking their balls around.

Don't use more balls than you need, they clog the ball return. Keep your other ball in the bag until you need it.

Careful with that drink, but also! Is it raining or snowing outside? Don't walk into the pit with your dirty shoes... take them off, and put your bowling shoes on down in the pit. You may tell others to do the same, but say it nice. Wait. If they keep doing it, you can say something if you like. Might be best to contact management, but they might not be as 'bowling cool' as you are.

Open hand slap is for a good shot, closed fist is for a bad shot. Don't be the guys at the lanes who slam their arms as hard as they can, and butt heads after each shot regardless of what happens.

I'll have more, as this is one of the most important lessons in bowling! You golfers know that, don't ya?!

Oh my god...I thought the open hand and closed fist ritual was something we did out here in my little league....LOL!!!!

Thanks for the further elaboration Mr.700. As far as the dirty shoes syndrome, we have a great dealer of smokers who have to go outside for a cig. You can get those little booties like they have in hospitals to wear on your feet and it's highly recommended to wear them when going also to the snack bar & especially the restroom...

A couple of months ago I missed an easy spare, I think it was the 4 pin, and I punched the scoring monitor above the lane. It started to swing and it went blank but thank god it came back. Phew, I'll never do that again.

I was about 11 years old bowling with my dad in a "Sunday Morning Family" league and I missed a super easy shot. I smacked the cheesy old computer console and shorted it out. We could not finish our games....it was quite embarrassing.....

You bring up a great point... the 'slammer dude'. Yes, don't punch crap. You break it and that sucks for everyone, on top of that everyone thinks your a hot head nut!

I had a guy take his ball and drop if from chest high and catch it right next to me, I sure turned around and said some crap I wouldn't say here, after checking for small children and women.

"Hey, don't blame the ----- ball cuz you ----- suck, --- ----!

You must also be ready at this point to catch the ball, as they might be enraged enough to toss it at you!

Don't beat on stuff at the lanes.

I was just at the PA State High School Bowling Championship in Pittsburgh this last weekend. Very very tough shot. My team did terrible, but damn, when we made shots, we were the loudest kids there. Everyone else did bad too. Our team shot a 5041 for 6 games.

We just kept missing spare after spare after spare after spare...

...but we were still loud and enthusiastic. You don't see that many teams like that anymore.

Important Lesson: Always keep the spirit up

Yikes, that is a tough series. In league last Wednesday, I shot a decent series 609 but got my butt handed to me by the guy on the other team. He shot a 715 scratch. This is second week in a row shooting 700.

You are right about attitude and the thing to remember the most is to have a very short memory about throwing the bad shot. Who cares? It is in the past and you need to be positive and move forward.

Yea, we are usually a 1000 pin team. It's sad these were my last games in high school as a senior. I went out with a 230 though, which was the high game for the team for the weekend.

No matter how hard I try, I always end up around 600s for my series. My high is a 634, and I keep getting closer and closer.

Not bad shooting. If I may ask, are you planning to go onto college and bowl for your team there? I've only shot one 700 myself (I think it was 706). It ain't easy....

None of the colleges I am applying to have bowling as a sport, but only intermural. I am still going to go to as many Junior Bowlers Tour events that I can to get better until I become too old to participate and then we'll see what happens from there.

Bowling Etiquette Continued..

1. Always apologise to the batsman if you bowl a beamer.
2. Only appeal if you're convinced that it's out.
3. You must advise the Umpire if you are changing your mode of delivery.
4. Allow the field to settle before begining your approach.
5. Don't follow through down the middle of the wicket.
6. Don't bounce small children, that's a hard ball you're using.
7. Applaud the batsman at the start and end of his innings.
8. If a fielder makes a mistake encourage him, don't moan.
9. Don't pick the seam.
10. Don't use vasaline or other artificial substance to shine the ball.

Remember these rules and the game will be more fun for everyone. Unless you're playing the Aussies in which case do whatever you like to dismiss the buggers.

ok, good advice, but... imagine this scenario:
About 10 little 5-year old kids are having a birthday paty. At the bowling alley. On the lanes right next to yours. Not only do they run up their lane as soon as it's their turn, no, they also run up your lane, leaving you without the slightest chance of concentration. So now what do you do? It would probably considered very bad form if you started screaming at them. I myself have come up with an easy method: You focus their attention on yourself and say something along the lines of "Lucky you, you have all just won a free bowling rules course." The explain to them what Phlabby just wrote, and finish off with "people who break these rules aren't allowed to bowl here". Worked for me 😛

As to "
Open hand slap is for a good shot, closed fist is for a bad shot. Don't be the guys at the lanes who slam their arms as hard as they can, and butt heads after each shot regardless of what happens." : I get a hug from my teammate when I strike... lol he has a 190-something average, mine is about 122 or something... doesn't happen that often 😉

Yay I'm bowling in a tourney 😀
