I originally joined this site having only a passing knowledge of chess
(some would argue I still have), and more so purely to test myself
against my older brother who was already a member. However, as I
played a few more games I really began to enjoy playing chess and
chatting to some of the people on the site. It appeared to be a really
friendly, informal site where people enjoyed playing chess and
chatting to people.
Recently however I have begun reading through the forums and at
first found them lighthearted and fun, interspersed with a few helpful
hints. However, since this all this shit began about cheating they have
descended into a slanging match between various people.
As regards the ratings, although it is nice to know where you stand
and be recognised for your achievements and skills, this is after all
only a free to play (or for pawn stars still pretty damn cheap) website.
People who are that serious about chess - I would imagine - care
more highly about their rankings in offically recognised
clubs/leagues/tournaments.
If people want to cheat, let them. They only cheat themselves. If you
want to prove your point, beat them on the chess board.
