But is it right to say good luck?

I mean if you don't mean it.

No, chess is a game where luck is not involved... But I usually give them a friendly "Hello :-) "
Well do you really think so?

If you dont wanna wish the guy good luck - just wish him good thinking!

I usually say "Hello and welcome to your thrashing".
Or I will say "Hi! Please dont be mad when I whoop you"!

I almost always say "good luck" or "good game" because it's just good manners. Sometimes after the game I even send a message saying "thanks for the game" or "wow, great game we just had" or something to that extent.

I very rarely hate my opponent so much as to say something like "I hope you wither and die under my Queen Bishop opening, you pathetic waste of skin! Now go make me a chicken pot pie and beat yourself over the head with your own foot!"

Personally, I like to begin a game by stripping naked, putting a live badger on my head, whacking my opponent in the face with a moldy cheese, and singing the national anthem of Lichtenstein.
However, this is difficult to do online, so I usaully just say hi or good luck.........
We should play OTB sometime. Hearing the national ansthem of Lichenstein always brings a tear to my eye.

That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard.

I wish my opponent an enjoyable game - might be a mistake, since they must frequently laugh themselves to tears at my moves 😳

I always do say good luck and shake their hand in a tourney, even though I really do like winning, in the spirit of the game I do prefer losing a good game than winning a bad one.

In an online corr. game I write very little, unless there is an unusual position.
