I believe the poor kid is suffering horribly and putting him to sleep might actually be the "humane" thing to do for him.

Let me enlighten you, from The American Heritage Dictionary:
"animal - A person of inhuman character." I would say that any person who stabbed his mother 100 times in her eyes and another 11 times in her breasts qualifies as "a person of inhuman character"!
