Allow me to start.
1) Don’t allow your imagination to create false ideas of the people you are interacting with on the internet; People on here are the people who exist in non-Internet life, except it is harder to avoid those you would not normally interact with (the decent and the not so decent) when posting in a forum.

"New internet users" very rarely post on forums. They google maps and plumbers and instant message with their friends and do things specific to their profession. Not forums. That only comes after time.

Avoid slipping into errors and falsehoods such as:
The amount of time you have been a member of rhp is proportionate to your status and credibility.
A high rated chess player cannot be a complete tool irl, or indeed in the forums (indeed there is much evidence that contradicts this fallacy).
That apparently attractive online females are not really elderly fat dudes with beards and no clothes other than large grubby underpants.
