Like that title? Me too.

Where were you, what year was it... and what bike were you on when you learned to ride a bike?

It must have been about 1972 or 3, I was at my uncle's house next to my place and there was a huge hill. The grass was deep and soft, as the house was right next to a creek that often flooded.

When I say the hill was huge, I'm talking about a hill you would hardly notice as an adult, but when I was 4 or so it seemed very big to me. I was on my older cousin's blue Schwinn Banana seat bike with the big crazy bull high-rider handlebars.

I remember doing pretty well on the first run and bailing... I also remember realizing if I didn't stop I could keep going.

My father bought me a Honda QA50 with the fat tires next cuz he figured I wasn't going to get killed on the Schwinn.

I was seven and a boy named Troy let me borrow his bike. It was small, and I taught myself to ride it on the basketball court that was part of the park across the street from where I lived. It's rather amazing since I'm otherwise not exactly the poster child for grace and coordination.

Are you bringing the hedgehog? Do you have a tiny helmet for him/her?

it just rolls into a ball and bounces if it starts falling.

Yes, and of course. Hedgehogs are very fragile and precious creatures. I'll keep Mr. Hedgie in the front basket, with a seat belt, and car seat, and front and side impact airbags. Plus a monocle for sexiness.

I got my first bicycle in 1976. I was 5 at the time.
It took me 2 years to be able to make a corner with it.

All in all I find bicycles rather frustrating.

When I was 8 my older brother handed me a mountain bike and told me if I could learn how to ride it by the time I got home (we were 3 miles away from the house), I could have it. Needless to say, thaes how I got my first bike, along with numerous scratches and bruises. Thank god he gave me a bike helmet.......

So that's why you spent so long in Holland...

Did you ever manage without the training wheels??(jk)

It was 1985, I was 4 and it was a small orange bike that had been passed around the family for about 30 years (no training wheels). I learned on the sidewalk out front. I knew when I was going ot fall and would head for the bulevard (sp?). Within a week I was riding. In a month I was racing and beating my cousin who was 2 years older than me. I still ride my bicycle to and from work for exercise and pleasure.

I think you'd have more pleasure and get to work faster if you got a bigger one.
