I hear ya there. My own graph shoots suspiciously upward from 1200 to the upper 1500s, but that was a result of taking more time between moves, not playing at work, and not playing after coming home from a bar.

Try to look at it a little more constructively... past games are visible... SO, if enough suspicious games are linked, one would really have some material to go through and see if there's a specific problem.

Furthermore any such board would actually work more as a preventive tool, rather than an actual "wanted poster"... once the spotlight is on somone, he or she is more likely to get scared off, and keep a low profile.

I'm amazed at the negative and destructive nature of your posts... try improving and evolve, rather than just fall asleep in your defensive nature.

Cheers

I think your use of the word 'suspicious' is improtant. There may be 'suspicious' games and 'suspicious' improvements in a players game, but all we can ever have is suspicion, never proof.

A 'potential cheater' board is IMHO a horrific idea. I think it is clear from previous postings that there are several reasons why people who aren't cheating could end up on such a board. How would that make you feel? Imagine you've spent time & effort improving your game and then suddenly you're on a 'maybe he's a cheater' board. You feel embarased by something you should be proud of, no one wants to play you, and every time you win a game people will think you did it by cheating. It only takes accusation & suspicion to ruin a good persons credability, and they will leave the site.

Don't be too amazed by our 'negative' posts. This is not the first time somone has raised the question of cheating & how to prevent it and we have discussed it at length. Although we are of course open to new thoughts what you are hearing back are the conclusions that many of us reached after lengthy discussion, accusation & counter accusation, flame wars and all round unpleasentness.

nb. please stop swearing in your posts.

Would you rather want people leaving the site because it has no measures to prevent cheating?

Or at least has examples that can guide people away from accepting bogus challenges? Once you have 10 or 15 very strange games, you might wanna steer away from them, or at least be aware that you're challenging someone who's really improving a lot?

I'm not trying to point fingers here, I'm trying to prevent an evil trend from spreading.

Should more people start using tutors, what will become of your precious chess site then? Then it wont be 1 member labelled "cheater" it will be an entire site labelled worthless.

And yes.. nuff said..

The site works very well thank you.
A warning against people who are improving? Look at their public games, look at their profile, look at their recent history.
Really, just don't play this person again, and leave it at that.

Man, someone really must have wronged Flix to get his panties so bunched up after being here only 3 months or so.

It is too bad, but people will always cheat. If Russ decides someone is cheating he will warn them or even worse.

Cheaters tend to leave on their own. They realize no one is impressed with their huge graph full of 10 and 12 point jumps... and having a 1500+ rating and getting beat by someone rated 1350.

Also, if they use a computer will probably get beat by the "big guns"... or getting messages like "Good game, but I don't think I'll be playing you anymore." If someone messages me and says "Why won't you play me anymore?" I just say, "I don't feel like it. Enjoy your time at RHP."

I don't keep a list... but I think I've got 3 or so people I know not to play.

The other side of this whole "cheater" thing is the guy who's new to the site and rated 2100 USCF or something. They play their good games and someone says "You are a cheater."

There is no way to prove it one way or the other in most cases! Now we have a good player who comes to the forums and says "I thought RHP was cool, but it is not. I want my money back!" (It happens, and sometimes they don't even want the money back!)

Maybe anyone who is accused of using a computer should be able to challenge their accuser to a game of GO. The winner of the GO game would be considered to be in the right. Failure of the accuser to respond to the GO challenge would count as an admission that he was wrong :-)

Can the accused use a Go playing program? Is such a thing available (and in Engrish) 🙂

That is the genius of my idea :-)
I believe there is no really good GO playing program for the PC, though there are several that, given a start of several stones, can hold their own against a reasonable player. Eg http://www.goplusplus.com/

GO is a much harder game for a computer than chess.

Obviously a serious accuser would have to make sure he could play GO. This nicely cuts down on the rate of accusations.

No. I don't think a database would help you much.
