nothing but the old clothes he stands in?

1. Do you give him a meal?

2. Take him for a wash?

3. Give him new clothes?

4. Give him some money?

I doubt money is a wise thing to give? Maybe money was a problem that led him to posessing nothing?

Should he be cleaned before having new clothes?

Wash him and his clothes and let him be presentable to others?

A meal and let him on his way?

What would you give to a man who has nothing but the old clothes he stands in?

A few bucks and a short, friendly conversation, letting him know he's part of the brotherhood of humanity. Some food or coffee maybe.

Maybe if you can afford it all of that plus a job if you can. Feed him first then clean him up. Then work him. Then clean him up and feed him again. But don't ever turn your back on him. I've done that a few times. I don't regret, it but it's not exactly pleasant either.

He wants to know what you can give him, not what you should!

Aside from the money, I'd go with everything else in this response.

i have to agree with this statement. I had one incident which has sadly changed my attitude to these people

we had a "Big issue" guy who used to have their stall outside our shop during my gap year and he regularly came to "work" in his open top BMW car then put on these dirty clothes and then start begging for money. He wasn't there long. Its such a pity that such people are about and it has now made me suspicious of many of these people.

If i didn't have the above experience then i would probably give something if i was able to. I would never give money but food and maybe some dog food (in oxford they all seemed to have dogs with them)

Bring your chessboard and challange him. Then you have given him the finest gift of them all, your time.

Are you making this up?
Do you know how much they make from selling the Big Issue?

Besides, Big Issue sellers are not begging, they are selling a magazine, just the same way you sold things in your shop.

I am sure you are a decent guy, if you knew how much hard work, pain and misery that was involved in getting a scheme like that up and running, and continue to stay up and running, you wouldn't believe this urban myth.

(If you PM me the area you worked in, I can finally meet this BMW driving Big issue seller and then name and shame him, but like my search for the holy grail, I think it will prove fruitless.)

😉

Edit:
http://www.bigissue.com/

http://www.carpages.co.uk/guide/bmw/

They would need to sell about 34000 copies.

Edit:
I didn't include road tax, MOT or running costs in the above.
