You "poke" your arms and legs in and out, so that's why it's the Hokey-Pokey. Hokey-Cokey? I don't get it.
1) you put your limbs in and out and shake them all about, poking them in and out is just plain rude.
2) It aint meant to make sense, it is meant to be shouted as loud as possible by drunk people, it's a precursor to the primal scream, try next time your drunk.
P.s best to do it in a group otherwise it looks a bit 'bag lady'. 🙂
