Can anyone point me to a concise source of information on this? I want to know if it will give me any problems running a PC with Windows XP.

Shouldn't be a problem. It's video software meant for viewing in the DivX formated movies.

It's required for a lot of applications and web sites that use video... It shouldn't be any problem for any PC capable of running WinXP or Vista.
