Why do so many of the good players on this site come from Holland? Is there a lot of chess in schools over there? Or is the royal game particularly popular over there? 🙂

After Max Eeuwe beat Alekhine in 1935 and became world champion, chess became quite popular in holland yes. There are quite alot of chess clubs.

But I wonder more why there aren't much people from eastern european countries in the top of the ratings. I would say chess is much more popular there. (This may be because people have other countries their flags than the land they live in.)

I think it's probably because they all play on Russian websites i expect 😉 I would have thought we'd have more Icelandic people here, chess is huge over there!

...or tulips, as it's spring. Or prostitutes as it's... well...

I'm having trouble finishing that sentence.

Hmm... Tulips, eh?

Very pretty this time of year.

It stands to reason that the Dutch will generally be good chess players.

They get ample practice at logic reasoning in the face of grave adversity, loads of "hands on" experience at thinking 3 steps ahead and plenty of training in patience and acceptance...as they plow through the continuously growing nightmare of Dutch bureaucracy.

That almost sounds like a cry for American freedom - you should move to Wyoming - a lot less bureacracy there (people don't much care what happens in Washington).

Of course, the USA is doing its best to catch up to Europe's socialism....😕

Hehe, Moldy Crow will understand the problem with this sentence...

For anyone outside of Colorado, be happy! It's the end of April, and when I woke up this morning, there was a fresh quarter of an inch of snow on the ground. Well, just more time for RHP then.

Its easy.

They're geographically much lower than most of the rest of us, so there is more oxygen feeding their brains, so their logical faculties are better.

Just to prove the point... how many Sherpa's are in the top 20 on RHP? Eh? Eh?

I thought that the German's have more GMs per registered players and the Russian's have more GM's. I guess that they do not play here.

I hate to make sweeping generalizations about whole countries/groups ; but I've found most of the players from Columbia and Argentina are really good too .

They're all probably from the lowland parts of Argentina and Columbia.
