A geek is a person who is fascinated, perhaps obsessively, by technology and imagination. Geek may not always have the same meaning as the term nerd (see nerd for a discussion of the disputed relation between the terms).

I'm almost certainly a nerd, as I understand it, but not nearly enough of a media-whore to be a geek. Is this right? I'm using Neal Stephenson's usage of the term 'nerd'; I'm not sure if he ever mentions 'geek'. To me, 'nerd' connotes serious interest in innately interesting things, possibly to the detriment of interest in more widely interesting things, while 'geek' connotes serious interest in innately boring, although sometimes widely interesting things. Thus it's a basically subjective distinction, although it's fairly clear that someone who speaks nine languages, say, is a nerd while someone who speaks Klingon is a geek.

By Starrman's definition, I'm a nerd with taste in music.

Aha! According to that article, darvlay doesn't need to be intelligent to be a geek: "A 'geek', however, is obsessively fascinated with particular subjects, but is not necessarily attributed an above average intelligence."
