Here in the usa it is practically a written law that a man must buy a woman a diamond ring, preferrably expensive (2 months salary is expected). however, the diamond cartel is ugly, and one could fathom many reasons not to want to purchase a diamond for any occassion. So my question is, in your country/culture, what types of rings, other jewelry, gift, or token is traditionally given from the man to the woman as a symbol of engagement and /or marriage? Portuguese and Irish traditons are of special interest to me, as that is where my family descends from.

Yes - this is true as wood is rare and expensive in New Zealand. I could not afford a real wooden spoon until I was 25.

Actually when I got engaged I had to shear my girlfriend first....

In Tennessee (USA), the groom buys his Mother-in-law a new set of false teeth and the Father-in-law a new pair of overalls...LOL...my wife is gonna kick my arse....😡..

Actually, the institution marriage is slowly fading or melding into simple partnerships, or common-law relationships...at least I see it that way....
