I find I can play better with Alpha pieces on a small size wood tile board.

Nice stats.

So Book and High Contast are wildly more popular than anything else?

How boring. 😞

Btw, all you Alpha fans, I looked at the Alpha set and it's very nice! I might change to it. I do like the Newspaper set, though, because it gives the pieces more space.

Ah, but they are the defaults.

[or, rather, were, but "high contrast" is not anymore for RHP, but it still is for other "brands" such as CAW]

I find I suck no matter what pieces and board I use, but I use Mérida pieces on Storm Clouds, standard size.

Standard Brushed Steel with Newspaper pieces.

By the time I'd gotten around to experimenting with other combos, I'd been playing here so long that I couldn't focus on the board the same way and had to return to my current settings.

I use "book" and "storm clouds" with the large pieces. For me, "book" comes closest to the traditional look of the pieces in print, and the large setting comes closest to what you see in newspapers and chess books. I like "storm clouds" because that is the closest to the old WCN website board which I always liked. For me, it's just the right colour.
