Kafka's novels and short stories are amazing. My inclination will be "The Trial" and "The Metamorphosis".

Metamorphosis is one of the funniest stories I've ever read. All Kafka's short stuff is a hoot, except maybe Josephine & the Mouse People (I don't get that one at all!) I can't get into the novels, though, which is perhaps just as well, because life is short.

I agree with "Josephine and the mouse". "The Hunger Artist" is another bizarre short story.😲

His diary also makes for quite outlandish reading. Do you think he was a prophet?

About his Life,I will say yes.His alienation, illness, the great war,his fear of compromising with women and fear of his father made him a Prohet of his own fate.

i couldn't agree more.
i was absolutely rolling around with laughter from start to end of that story.
but strangely most people seem to think it's not funny.

I haven't read it in over 20 years, but I don't recall The Trial being an overly long book. I thought it was brilliant and funny in a macabre way.

Exept for "Auf der Gallerie", I have to admit I haven't read anything by kafka... mainly because the german originals are very annoying to read because of old-fashioned syntax etc.
I once read an extract though which I quite liked, I can't remember the name though. I'd love to go buy the book... maybe one of you smart peopla can help me.
The story I mean is the one about the guy who comes into this town and they all start this psychological war on him... there's something about a castle too. I can't remember the end or anything in between, for that matter), but I know it starts off in wintertime and in the end he either commits suicide, dies some other way or is driven to move away.
Soooo... does anybody know which book/story I mean from that lousy description? 😞
Thx

Angie

We read "Der Prozess" and some of the short stories at school and analyzed them to death. I still like Kafka, though. πŸ˜‰

Ooooh thank you, that's it πŸ˜€
Yeah we read the first chapter or so of that one in 8th grade... and in year 11, we were doing short stories (Parabeln?), and we practised with stuff like "die Stachelschweine" by Schopenhauer-things where just about anybody can see the parallel meaning. And then... in the first class test.... we got "Auf der Gallerie" by Kafka, without a warning... but oh well, I think I got a B+ or something, so I didn't mind.
I'm gonna print that story out and read it tomorrow πŸ˜€
btw, Nordlys: Have you read "Woyzeck" by Büchner? We're doing that at the moment in german class... it annoys the heck outta me because a) the way they speak is really irritating and b) the plot doesn't really have a point.
But... the worst book I have ever had to read was "Die Leiden des jungen Werther"... I don't think I finished reading that πŸ˜•

No, I haven't read any Büchner. 😳 I agree that "Die Leiden des jungen Werther" isn't much fun to read... I much prefer Hans Weigels "Die Leiden der jungen Wörter". πŸ˜€
