She deserved that chance. She’d lived at the dog rescue centre for 530 days when I finally adopted her which included 3 months of Covid lockdown and 8 introductory meetings with her. The day I first met her the guy there told me ‘Just ignore her, don't try to touch her or talk to her’. She was what they call ‘reactive’ and very anxious with strangers.
I bet the dog understood what he said, not the actual words obviously, but from his intonation, mannerism, facial expression, hand movements, the dog will pick up the gist of his comment. The fact that you ingored the man, it went down well with the dog.. People dont give animals credit for being smart.

Sorry, I didn’t explain well. He told me that before I first met her, knowing that she disliked any interest from strangers. I joined his walk with her and was allowed to walk her on my own on my third visit. He was just making sure that nothing happened to put me off her. On my 6th visit after she jumped up to greet me he said ‘now she’s ready for a trial night at your home’. The last thing dog rescue centres want is people returning a dog because it hasn’t worked out.

We adopt our pets from the local shelter. We were in the process of adopting a very friendly Boxer after several adoption sessions when as we were returning from a walk with it, it tried getting at one of the shelters cats. The shelter folks said it, the Boxer was not a fan of cats. As we had two cats that out an abrupt end to our adoption thoughts for it. As we were about to leave we noticed a new arrival ( a Labradoodle) in the corner of one of the enclosures. We entered the enclosure and approached cautiously as it was trembling…a lot. To make a long story short, after a few (7-8) visits with him we adopted him (Bobby). We were lucky to have had him our family if only for about 4 years. Unfortunately we had to put him down as he was diagnosed with what turned out to be incurable cancer. My daughter, a vet, did the deed and as he peacefully left us there was a lot and I mean a lot, of tears.😢 Pets are, after all family.👍

I remember a pic of him, he looked a lovely character. The heartbreak of losing a family dog can make us think that we never want to put ourselves through it again and then …. we spot another sad, needy dog in a rescue centre 🥰

Oh ya. Two more (Beau and Bella) have become family since then.👍
