I think beyond any doubt it had to be the 70's. Here is a partial list:

Godfather I & II
Dog Day Afternoon
French Connection
Rocky I
Star Wars IV - A New Hope

Does anybody disagree?

Add "Deliverance" to that list ... & I partially agree ...

I think I disagree...

Let's see:

Pulp Fiction
The Big Lebowski
Fargo
The Shawshank redemption
The usual suspects
Goodfellas
American Beauty

All from the 90's.

Before the 70's there were lots of great classics as well:

Dr. Strangelove
Soilent green
Space oddessey
On the waterfront

To name but a few.

I think the 70's maybe had a few of the greatest films ever made, but certainly not the decade which was best for cinema.

The nineties gave us:

Reservoir Dogs
Glengarry Glen Ross
Exotica
Pulp Fiction
Smoke
Secrets & Lies
As Good As It Gets
Last Night
Magnolia

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968) simply stands alone.

While all of you have made compelling points for the movies you mentioned, I still think collectively the 70s was the strongest era for moviemaking. I think the movies just in that time had much more substance and better acting overall. Here is a more detailed list:

1970:

M*A*S*H
Airport
Five Easy Pieces
Patton

1971:

A Clockwork Orange
Carnal Knowledge
Diry Harry
The French Connection
Harold and Maude
The Last Picture Show

1972:

Deliverance
The Godfather

1973:

American Graffiti
Enter the Dragon
The Exorcist
Last Tango in Paris
The Long Goodbye
Serpico
The Sting

1974:

Chinatown
The GodFather II

1975:

Dog Day Afternoon
Jaws
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

1976:

All the President's Men
Carrie
Marathon Man
The Omen
Robin and Marion
Rocky I
Taxi Driver

1977:

Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Saturday Night Fever
Star Wars IV

1978:

The Deer Hunter
Superman

1979:

Alien
Apocalyspe Now

Granted I don't have everything and I am sure I missed some others but these are just the ones I like. I think this stands alone. This is not to say that other decades were not strong. I just can't remember a decade with as many powerful movies. Perhaps I am mistaken.

1992- Alien 3. Most underrated movie of all time.

Although, the 70's were pretty good. But don't forget the current half-decade..

You liked the third Alien? Really? The one when they are on the penal colony planet? I have to disagree. I think the second Aliens is better than the first but I didn't like the third one.

I agree every year or decade has usually some fantastic movies but I think all of the movies I listed in the 70s are still held in the highest regard. I am not so sure more current good movies will be held in the same light.

How can it be that various people are extolling the virtues of '70s movies, but no one mentions Annie Hall? After all, it is the greatest movie of all time.

Also by Woody Allen in the 70s were:

1971 - Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Sex (But Were Afraid To Ask)
1971 - Bananas
1973 - Sleeper
1975 - Love And Death
1977 - Annie Hall
1978 - Interiors
1979 - Manhattan

True, true but I am biased against Allen for being a sleeze so I intentionally omitted him. Not fair, I admit. Even before his sleezedom, I never really liked his stuff.

Annie Hall is not by any stretch of the imagination the greatest film of all time.

yes, every decade is the best decade, for an evolving always challenging,ok there is a lot of rubbish then there always has been a load of tosh in each decade of film making. So my conclusion is that this is the best decade for films as it is relevent to ourselves rather than nostalga.

Nonsense. Woody Allen is the greatest American director of all time, and Annie Hall (or possibly Crimes and Misdemeanors) is the greatest film of all time.

Although I will grant you that his last few movies have been below par.

Kubrik has always been my favourite. Also worth noting that "To have and have not" is a far superior film to Casablanca.
