Yeah there's a process you have to go through as well. Most avatar websites will link you to a free avatar-hosting service. You have to select the one you want, paste the link of the one you want to the avatar-hosting site, and then paste the link of the avatar hosting site to your profile page. It's not as complicated as it sounds - I have an avatar, so I'm proof that it can happen.

You can also make your own if you have a picture you would like to use. Just resize it to the allowed avatar size and put it on the web (there are many places where you can load up your pictures for free, if you don't have your own webspace).
