Where do they go?

Scenario:

Washday on Saturday, my girlfriend goes into work quickly for a few hours.
I decide to surprise her by doing the washing before she returns (hoping for ample rewards for this absolutely selfless deed when she returns 😛).

I wash everthing, then when I start to hang it on the washing line I notice that some socks seem to have lost their partners.
I go back to the machine, but there's nothing in there.
I somehow managed to lose two (different) socks in the washing process (including one of her pairs).

Where the hell could they be?

Now I'm wearing unmatched socks and needless to say, I did not receive any of the rewards I fantasized about...

What you need to do is throw away the odd socks you have now. This is the only way you can be certain that the missing socks will turn up again.
Happens every time! 🙂

As everyone knows, the laundry pixies expect and demand tribute periodically in the form of socks. As a laundry pixie only has one leg, they only require the one sock (hence not taking pairs).

It is well know that without such tribute they will exact a heartless revenge on their hosts, usually by ensuring something red mysteriously gets mixed in with the whites!

Of course, tastes change and pixies are as fickle as the next mystical creature, so if they decide they no longer like the tartan knee length sock they will return it (often just after you have ditched the pair to this item, cos they do enjoy a laugh) and will take an alternative in its place.

In much the same way, the little seen cutlery faires expect the occassional teaspoon and the trouser sprites will strike if once and a while they are not allowed to leave their hosts unzipped at inopportune moments.

I thought everyone knew you only washed socks in odd pairs!

That way the laundry fairies get confused and return the odd socks they have appropriated previously, allowing you to get a matched pair when you hang your socks out to dry.

Always worked for me.

I think it was Seinfeld who spoke about the socks trying to escape.
Socks have a hard life. Stuck in shoes on smelly feet, days on end...

So they sit in their hampers and plan their great escapes...and the washing machine (the clothes disco) is the best time. They hide until you've turned your back and then they do a runner.

I once watched a documentary on the matter. It was called 'the young ones'.

the apparent scientific reason for this phenomenon is that as the socks are spun round with the other washing they evntually get caught within other washing...often in bed sheets. this means that they ofter go "missing" for a time until they magically reappear when they fall out of the sheet/clothes. a simple way to prevent the problem is to wash socks separatly.

Ha! My wonderfull mother has laid out a plan that has worked for her in foiling the plan of these mythical pixies for years now.

Just stuff your socks into a cushion cover and chuck it into the wash!

Mother knows best 😛

Shopping tip:When buying things that come in pairs, don't just buy a pair, buy six pairs, then you won't notice if one goes missing.
