Being time-offset from most momentous events, I've got most of them when I turned on radio or TV in the morning. Kennedy 1963 when I was in my underwear ironing a shirt. 9/11 just before the second plane hit, saw it before I was more than half-awake. Jan6 Capitol insanity the same.
The one I remember most clearly had no images:
"The King's life is drawing peacefully to its close". I was seven years old.

I rememdber my father who lived in Oslo called me early morning, very upset, to tell me that our then Prime Minister Olof Palme had been shot close to midmight the night before, 28 February 1986 in central Stockholm. Palme, who had declined bodyguards when he and his wife Lisbeth walked home after a cinema, was shot in the street and died shortly after. The murderer still not found.

I remember that but do not remember what I was doing when I heard about it. The previous month I witnessed the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster live in my college bar with a group of distraught people that included several very distraught American exchange students.

We are at the 50th year anniversary of the Israeli Olympic athletes being taken hostage and then killed by Palestinian gunmen.
------------------------------------------------- From the AP

“They’re all gone.”

With those three chilling words from ABC sportscaster Jim McKay, the worst possible news was delivered on the fate of 11 Israeli hostages at the Munich Olympics.

I was positively stunned with disbelief and discomfort. I'll never forget that.
