Full Metal Jacket basically invented the idea of the really tough training sergeant, and the whole first half of the film seemed to have a great influence on most war movies nowadays, since before then filmmakers never really bothered with showing what soldiers went through in training camps. I don't see why you don't include Apocalypse Now though, the best war movie ever made.......

Well...
Saving Private Ryan sucks, after you've seen it a few times, you realise that apart from the blood, explosions and Tom Hanks, it's just a film about blood, explosions and Tom Hanks.
Full Metal Jacket on the other hand is broader, less pretentious, more reflective, insightful, better scripted, acted, less funded and an all round better piece of cinematography.
I hate to split hairs, but I thought that Full Metal Jacket (1987) was the best war movie ever, until I saw An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), and noticed that some of the drill sargeant's lines were virtually pilfered from this movie and pasted into Full Metal Jacket, most noticeable the steers and queers dialogue. But, apart from that little bit of potential plagiarism I still think that it's one of the greatest war movies ever, and sits right up there with Apocalypse Now and Platoon in my book.

Which of these two movies is to more influencial/definative war movie?
Full Metal Jacket (Stanley Kubrick)
Saving Private Ryan (Steven Spielberg)
spielberg schindlers list
kubrick paths to war
but out of the two saving private ryan has the greater impact more people have seen it, and games like medal of honour are direct homages,
full metal jacket is the better film though.

They were both trying to be authentic, and both probably bought the book '1001 ways to insult and break down troopers so in battle, they'll follow any order given them, no matter how barbaric or against their morals'
I can't agree that An Officer and a Gentleman is the best war movie ever either, as, if I remember correctly, they never went to war in that movie? Just did a bit of training, shagged some burds, and came out with some great lines.
The war movie that's probably been the most influential to me was 'The Grey Zone'. Utterly disturbing, utterly compelling and completely and utterly brilliant. For some reason though, I've never seen it in a video shop. Actually, just as I type this, I'm wondering whether this actually counts, as its about life inside Auswitzh. Oh, it does count, cos it details an uprising.
'Saving Private Ryan's' first scene on the beach is excellent, but the rest of the movie sucks. I prefer 'Shaving Ryan's Privates' cos it has more action throughout. 😛
