Christy Mathewson
for pitchers greg maddux-not very fast but his placement is amazing. john smoltz is a great closer.
andrew jones is one of the most consistent outfielders
i hate the yankees but gary sheffield has a great bat speed.
old school players--fred mcgriff back in the day(he should have retired years ago) ruth of course...just for the curse and i just love that guy in the stands who caught the ball to rob the cubbies last year!

do you think sammy will ever escape the corked bat insident though. no matter how many home runs he hits people will always remember this. even as he joins aaron ruth bonds and mays in the elite 600 home run club people will always place an asterix by his name in the record books.

The best is John Paciorek (brother of Tom and Jim Paciorek)
He played one game for the Houston Colt .45s (later the Astros) in 1963. He had three singles in three at bats, plus two walks. He scored four runs and had 3 RBIs. That gives h ...[text shortened]... on base percentage. Five plate appearances and was never retired.
`y posted by Alpha10[/i]A lot of players were tiny, fleet footed speed demons when they first came up. Once they've grown up a little bit they start bulking up. Weight training has become an integral part of baseball, unlike in the past. Even if Bonds, Sosa, and McGwire use/d steroids, I don't think that is the main reason (or even a large reason) for their success.

In the past it was thought that excess bulk would impede a batter's swing, so weight training was frowned upon. So you had a lot of skinny slap hitters in the Mark Belanger mold. It wasn't until the mid-eighties that this perception began to change. Baseball players pump iron now, and it shows. You see a lot of young players coming out of the minors who are on the skinny side. Check back on them in a few years and see how they've bulked up.

Who are the very best and why? (present day ,and past)
teams, pitchers, hitters, whatever
My pics are Christy Mathewson, Babe Ruth, Ryne Sandberg, Lou Gerhig, Joe Dimaggio, and Roger Clement
I'm a Red Sox fan since birth so I can no longer like Roger Clemmens.
I have to go back to the classic players -
1) Carlton Fisk
2) Butch Hobson
3) Jim Rice
4) Freddie Lynn
5) Rick Berlson
6) Yaz (should be higher on the list, but I'm just going through my favorite year in my head)
7) The Boomer!
8) Eck
9) Bill Lee
Anyone say Bill Buckner, and I'll faint 🙄
