a (very) breif history! (from memory)
chris met a computer buff at university. his name was russ. a friendship was forged, never to be broken. both were chess buffs.
another of chrises friend told of his idea to get the domain name "redhotpawn.com" and just have a picture of a flaming pawn there. much like this-a-one: http://www.redhotpawn.com/img/logo/rhp.gif
russ thought of creating a correspondence chess site, due to a dillilusionment with year-long e-mail games (dunno what the longest running game here is-but i'm sure it's longer than a year...π). they combined thei idea's-and thus, RHP was born!
site became active on 21st of february 2001, with a nubmer of testers who are friends of chris and russ. (i'm pretty sure that some of those early people were testers-and i'm even pretty-er sure that the king and I is one...therefore, dirty cow's gonna be the first *ever* non-forceably joined member! on the 22nd...)

meet chess host-a computer player written by russ and no half bad. went inactive a while ago due to the site getting overly big and it was taking up server space. you can download him from http://www.redhotpawn.com/rival - back in the day, it was an insentive for joining...
once upon a time, everyone got unlimited games. but people recognised what those two geniuses called chris and russ were doing for chess and wanted to give them money. as you do. so they paid a one-off donation, got a pwetty little star breside their name and they were dubbed "pawn stars". then because this was so amazing everyone wanted it! (the unlimited games, not the paying bit...), so C&R made it so you could have unlimited games if someone challenged you, but you could only have 10 if you were challenging people. but this still was too much! so it was set as a blanket 10!
(i came along just before the limit was set to a blanket 10...)
but still, the servers struggled! (this is after a couple of new ones btw...) so the donations bit was changed cause those two couldn't just fund this from their pocket! twas set at $15 p/a, and this new breed of pawn stars would have wings! (thus they were dubbed "winged pawn stars"...) and the original pawn stars could keep this unlimited games etc, and the limited was set to 6. you can still tell a lot of original pawn stars as they have no wings! although some have purchased subscriptions so the only way you can tell is if they say so on their profile. if i remember correctly, jacko (then jacko007) was the last OP.
the someone had the idea of clans! and tournaments! these have barely changed and haven't bee around for overyl long...
all the stars change colour when you reach 10'000, 20'000, 50'000 and 100'000
the people:
old masters include david tebb, schleimann (who i can't spell and was driven away by a certain tuco), sintubin and they're the only ones i can really remeber from the non-so-near past...
protogies: ironman31 (currently outdoing his name and sitting at no.1), and Baron Von Munchousen (1870 was exceptional in those days...1600 was amazing when i started!)
forums people & scandals:
the original scandal was tuco. little **** drove schelimann away!
then there was cum toker, and pretty much any anagram of that (the anagram bit was chris and russ having a laugh-he wasn't a very nice paerson and made lotsa sexual jokes etc...)
and a certain someone started nourerous accounts and had conversations with himself on these here forums. twas actually kinda houmerous π
Map Wars!
these are the "most active player" wars, and rhymester and vaknso took part in them. vaknso was backed by the "map knights", while rhymester had his rebels (and, of course, red hot ted). vaknso had the early lead, but rhymester ended up on top-woo! he was the first to reach 100'000 moves, and earned himself a red spinny star...
then cheshire cat came along and pretty much whooped both their arses π
so there you are, a brief history in which i've probubly left a lot out and made up even more-but hey! π
oh, and the forums used to be weirdly presented and i could never understand them. and they didn't used to have smilies! π²
