Are we talking ability, influence, achievement or just expressing subjective opinion?

Well, for me:

Ability - Yehudi Menuhin (or Dave Swarbrick)
Influence - Mozart, maybe John Lennon if we go beyond music
Achievement - Paul McCartney
My favourite - Ian Anderson

Unknown quantity - Starrman
Lol, as long as it's not unknown quality 😉

I mixed it a bit with musicians vs. players/singers though. but I guess you got my point. I've just never thought of composers as musicians, except in the broadest sense. don't know why, but possibly because composers usually seem so distant. sheet music. and the 'musicians', in my mind, are the ones who actually perform the music.
There does seem to be a bias toward performers in contemporary society, but "musician" definitely includes composers:

mu·si·cian [ myoo zísh'n ] (plural mu·si·cians)
noun

music maker: somebody who plays, performs, conducts, or composes music

Realistically, the overwhelming majority of well-known performers are very limited in their knowledge and understanding of music. They are basically entertainers.

Dave swarbrick, great fiddler, I have the Martin Carthy/Swarbrick live, called "Both Ears and the Tail'. Very nice performance.
I might add on the same line, Tommy Peoples, Vincent Griffith, Eugene O'Donnell, Aly Bain, Ilene Ivers, Natalie McMaster to name a few.

Correct me if I'm wrong but did Yehudi Menuhin once express admiration for Swarbrick's music, saying something like (if it's possible), he, could not play like that.
