Why'd you ask everyone's opinion if you were just going to respond with "Over Fischer?" if anyone said anything other than Fischer?...

Yup. Mikhail Tahl, the "Riga Magician".
Over Fischer, by far.

Make a gift to yourself. Buy a book with a collection of his games, and be prepare to cry being touched by the ingenuity he put in his games.
He was a great.

Oh well. This is my humble opinion. Take it for what it worth.

Cheers!

Chessmetrics gives the highest performance rateing ever to Karpov at 2899. Fischer, Kasparov, Botvinnik, Lasker, Capablanca, and Kramnik are performance rated within twentyfive points of that rateing. Thus these players are even? Close to that Karpov performance rateing are Tal, and Alekhine. Honorable mention is Tarrasch.

yeah, but if you look at the peak average over a year ratings, it's:

#1 Fischer, #2 Kasparov, #7 Karpov and #17 Tal.

peak over five years, it's:

#1 Kasparov, #5 Fischer, #6 Karpov and #19 Tal.

over 20 years:

#1 Kasparov, #2 Karpov, #11 Tal, and i guess because Fischer wasn't playing much, he's pretty much dropped off. Over Kasparov's peak 20 years, he is rated 2856, and Karpov is 2818 over his. I think these figures must make Kasparov a strong contender for best player ever.

Guys like Tal and Capablanca though did have many moments of extreme brilliance.

What you are leaving out though is the fact chess has changed from period to period. Would Kaspy played well in the Fischer era? or would Fischer compete well in the database, computer era? It's comparing apples to oranges
