Robin Williams.

Possibly Woody Harrelson.

Both could do intelligent in a folksy way, sexually deviant, slyly humorous, caring.

Mr.T for the lulz.

Under a spreading chestnut tree
the village smithy stands.
I pity the foo 'cause birds be crappin' on him.
The rest is just jibba jabba. 😠

Tobey Maguire as a young Whitman, and maybe Anthony Hopkins as the older Whitman.

Whitman is my favorite poet btw, I absolutely love" leaves of grass", and have read it too many times to count.

On that recommendation, I have just ordered it from Amazon!

"Leaves of Grass" is excellent, with more than a few classics spread throughout.

Thank you!

(Btw, I've seen that Davis/Coltrane video in your profile literally dozens of times, and it's just as awesome every time.)

Funny that. Robin Williams was first to come to mind for me as well. 🙂

EDIT: A bearded RW, like he was in Good Will Hunting.

Interesting pick! In my opinion, though, he seems a bit too slick for the part.

Could Tobey Maguire play a gay poet, possessing uncommon passion and wisdom? I don't know if he could, to be honest. Tobey is a very subdued actor. Walt Whitman must have been a vibrant, freewheeling, passionate person. Although I don't doubt he could capture his quiet inner courage.

Anthony Hopkins would be an excellent older Whitman. Great choice.

Donald Sutherland.
