According to this book, http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/1861979738/qid=1142592974/sr=8-1/ref=sr_8_xs_ap_i1_xgl/026-5837348-6235612, you need about 4 foot of blubber to stop a bullet. I'm only trying to remember what I heard on a radio show about it, but I think that's about right.
