Why is it that when, you know, you're burying a guy alive and then you start to feel sorry for him.
And then you get over it and just keep shoveling?

HoH? Any thoughts or comments?
The shovelling isnt so bad, its all that damn pleading that gets old. When will they understand that it isnt going to make a difference?

I think the most insulting is when people offer you a draw when it's obvious you're in the dominant position. The cheek! And yes, I did win that game.

Regarding resigning a hopeless game though, if I was a quitter I would have resigned this after three moves:

Game 2848260

But AH YEAH, I came through!

If I was playing a 1700 player I probably would have the courtesy to resign, though.
I don't know. Even against a 1700 player I would hope you would hang in there a little longer. You're a pretty strong player. Even if you got your butt whipped shortly after you probably would have gained some good experience.
I'm not nearly as strong as you, I may be advanced beginner level, but I play several guys who are much stronger and always hang in there as long as I think prudent. In the end it's obvious I need to resign and I do. But I hang in there and try to learn from them.

Although these guys are my friends and there is some satisfaction from a checkmate. So other times I play it out and let them go for mate.

Have fun. And happy holidays to you.

Thanks ever so much for your contribution to this thread, I really appreciate it. It was full of wit, intelligence and elan, and I am going to write a letter to Santa asking that, for Christmas this year, he makes me as redoubtable as yourself.

The whining is a bit over the top isn't it? Sometimes I just can't see why they can't have a little dignity in the situation ;o)

Duct tape over the mouth usually does the trick for me.

You can also flip the shovel over and stun them with a resounding CLANG to the back of the head. They shake and spasm a little but at least they're quiet.

Thanks for your kind words, and you're right, sometimes it is better to hold out for a while.

My last proper OTB opponent would never let me checkmate him - it got pretty frustrating. Although after playing for a few months, he got back into chess in a big way (he was captain of his chess team in school but hadn't played for ten years), bought a copy of Fritz and started playing internet chess - then I didn't beat him for about three months solid! Before that it was 50/50, and we played about four times a week. That's what made me want to raise my game, the fact I always lost against any opening that wasn't e4.

Oh, and a happy holiday to you too! 🙂

Have you ever read Chopper's autobiography? He was made to dig his own grave once, but ended up embedding the spade halfway through the guys leg and making good his escape. Top man.

No, never heard of it. Who's Chopper and what was his story? Gotta hit the sack LK. I'll look forward to your response tomorrow.

Sorry it's took me a while to get back, but Christmas festivities have prevented me from doing so.

Chopper's Mark Brandon Read, with the exception of Ned Kelly, probably the most famous Aussie crim:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Chopper-Mark-Brandon-Read/dp/1904034144/sr=8-2/qid=1167246095/ref=pd_ka_2/202-8805450-4888644?ie=UTF8&s=books

It gets slammed on Amazon, but I'd recommend it. What kind of literary excellence do you expect from a bloke who managed to write most of it in prison, in the form of letters to his friends and family? It's not as if he had a manuscript to edit.

The poetry is bad, though.

ive noticed since I got to 1700s a lot of ppl will resign when they know they cant win, if your down a key piece and positioning most will resign. I think sometimes its kinda insulting when ppl dont. Plus its demoralizing to have a bunch of losing games going at the same time. People! Resign hopeless game! Focus your energy on the ones you have a chance on!
I can tell you, as a crappy 1200-1400 player, that I often don't resign until the bitter end because I'm trying to learn to play endgames. To do that, I want to play all kinds of games. I can learn from just about any situation. If I resign, I miss out on what I might have learned.

OTOH I'll resign if I get too disgusted with my cruddy playing.
