Just asking..

Why would a user who was unwilling to pay for his own RHP subscription renewal just last month now be
willing to finance the subscription of a total stranger? Could it be (a) generosity, (b) an attempt to buy a
new tender friend, (c) just another attention getter, or (d) all of the above?

As I type this I am putting on my "Thinking Cap" and will ponder it and get back to you. Can you give me a hint as to what it is they are "using"? That might help my pondering. Thanx in advance.

Is this one of the "Mysteries of the Ages?"
Somehow I don't think I will exhaust many brain cells pondering the issue, but that's just me.

Why couldn't we have got the user who wants to pay for another user's sub, directly together with the user who wants his sub paid (ME) and saved all the cyberspace?

We won't know that for a few more centuries.

You're forgetting about all the hoopla and self-aggrandizement.

None of the above, Andy. Two decisions are unrelated. First was prompted by a decision to expand my chess gameload to two other sites, Gameknot and Chess.com. Neither offer forum participation to non-subscribers. Second simply reflects my gratitude to Russ and Chris for five years of wonderful opportunity I otherwise wouldn't have had. Might add that Russ was particularly helpful during my sixteen months behind a serious medical issue moon. Another RHP Member, on his own initiative, came forward to generously fund continuation of my subscription directly with Russ at the time. Pay it forward. Pay it back. Take it for granted and go merrily on your way. Of no interest whatever what others have done or may do in a similar situation. Me and my household of one chose to do the thing (becoming part of Monty's Contest and this Christmas one) quietly with these salt of the earth people and these undeserved kindnesses in mind. That's all. Thanks for asking. Hope you'll participate in the contest by setting an example with your pick today.

It was just a simple question, Bobby. Sorry if it brought you any discomfort.

Am I ever glad to hear that. I was afraid we would be waiting for a long time.

the first one was over too quick...
no chance to bump it up with nothing to say...
make another one, much longer, much much much longer, so that as it predictably fizzles out, everyone will forget the promises made...

dang, i AM kinda cynical...

have you always been or is this something new? There may, with the right professional, be hope for your cynical bent, which by the way does, sometimes, serve a useful purpose.
