Has anyone ever had to win a game of chess playing with the black pieces against an unknown experienced opponent , in order to save their lives? If so,what was your first move, and if not what do you think your first move would be against your opponents 1/e3 ? would you believe that playing for your very existence would make a difference to the way in which you would normally play?? Would you feel you could play your best ever chess or would nervousness get the better of you?😀

In this case, Death plays black.

It suits him.

In a long game, I would play 2000+ . I am functioning several times better when under severe pressure of any kind. Interesting question indeed. I would play 1. d4

I have a better record (here and OTB) with black, I tend to wait for the other player to 'bring it' and with luck mess up.

If I found myself in a lost position, I'd 'accidently' bump the table.

1. ...c5

playing with the white pieces is not an option-d4 is therefore likewise not an option. Game lasts 2.5 hours for 40 moves ,1 hour for next 20 moves and 30 minutes for all remaining moves,no tie breaks and a draw or undecisive result means black loses, everything! Who would be bold enough to play a known black gambit game?😲

I don't know if I'd play a gambit. But I'd play 1.e5.

Edit: If I lose, do I get to choose the method of my demise? That might change my thinking.

1-e3 is whites first move-losing means being crushed to death under the hooves of a black knights horse!--😀

What would you have chosen? Dying of old age?

No. I'm not nearly clever enough to have thought of that.
