Great advice. It has solved all my problems and relieved me of all stress. Ommmmmmm. 😀 Now I can get on with some enjoyable weekend activities. Beer and cricket. 😛

98SE works fine....

Try a different mouse. Does the board have a USB port?
USB mice always work better, and avoids conflicts altogether.

If the board has USB (and a USB jack strip is installed) be sure to turn on USB functions in the BIOS setup.

USB mice are dirt cheap now, and get an optical one, and make your life better in many ways.

Win 98 with even a 200MHz processor can still do a lot, and run far faster than it can be fed from broadband.

If you're playing games, then hey....not the machine, but to go shopping at the supermarket? Who needs a Ferrari?

One doesn't need a Ferrari if one has a Ferrari.

for some unknown reason, I have always liked windows 98, although outdated and an old version, it seemed to run cleaner then the newer versions, But of course I have XP, which I like allot better,

does anyone know anything about the new version of windows thats coming out?

No USB port. No PS 2. just serial, parallel and an old keyboard interface. It's an ancient P90. I was going to give it to my mate for his daughter, so she can do word processing and the likes on it. The amount of time I've spent trying to get it working though, I could have got a second job and saved up for a much better one.

If it's an old P90, then it can't even go to the supermarket.

The problem is not Win98, the problem is the platform. Even Win 98 needs a minimum of 233MHz to run well.

You're right, the amount of time taken to get it working is more than it would cost to pick-up a second-hand 233MHz or better.

I'm still running 98SE. Bit like driving a an old MG. It's humble but corners fast as long as you don't expect to carry more than a few bags of shopping.

You should be VERY NICE to MIODude! Not insult him by saying, "Think you missed the point."

MIODude was trying to help you. Yeah, he's a very good, informative rep! These guys go out of their way to help members at RHP and they get a slam in the face! I suggest you say something to him - that you didn't mean to slam him...

If you don't, I don't think any computer experts here will ever help you again. 😳

Well, that's pretty obvious isn't it. Disrespect to all people who could help you... But since you posted this, I don't think the professionals will want to spend much time helping you either! 😠

From what you've said you have a bus mouse. Make sure that you don't have a driver for a PS2 mouse installed. Preferably get rid of Windows and install a good operating system like linux on your machine.

[Edit] - I've just read a your posts more carefully - if you want it to run acceptably you need to put linux on it. You'll have a problem with the browser as if it's a P90 it's probably got a very old chipset that can't access more than 128 Megs and some of the chipsets won't allow caching of more than 64 megs of memory - my old machine a p100 has 48 megs of memory and runs fine under linux with fairly recent versions of the various programs that make up the operating system running. I compiled a lot of this from source so don't ask about version numbers.
But the relevant stuff for your friends daughter will be the browser and the word processing package and they will be pretty spongy as these things tend to eat more memory than these old machines have, Mozilla takes about 30 seconds to start up on my old machine, but it is possible to use this site on it as long as you're patient. The advantage is that all the software's free as long as you can work it out or can find someone who knows how to install it.

Actually, Win98 will run on a very low pentium.. and officially, a 486 DX2 66 processor.

EDIT: but nothing would run with it on the 486. ie.. apps would never work
