I guess there won't exactly be a huge celebration but this is the tenth anniversery of XP. In the OS world, it is still #1, over *gag* Vista and 7. In Europe, it is clocking in at 54%.

@Sonhouse

Well that statistic doesn't really indicate that XP is the preferred system. XP has been around much longer so is bound to have been installed on more systems. It costs a shed load of money to upgrade, which people resent spending.

I use XP at home and 7 at work. I actually prefer 7 more and more everyday as I find more and more little shortcuts that make life easier. However, I'm not willing to shell out over £100 for ir at home. I'll just keep tootling along with my cheap OEM version of XP that I can't install on a ****ing SATA drive. 🙂

? I have a SATA drive with XP on it. Why can't you get it on a Sata? Shouldn't be any difference twixt that and the old IDE stuff. People don't want to upgrade because of the price for sure but also a lot of software written for XP won't work on 7 unless you go into that compatibility mode, don't have 7, but doesn't that force the box to run slower than it would in native 7 code? Anyway, next year 8 will be out, supposed to be cross platform to mobiles, laps, notes, as well as PC's so maybe it's best to wait for 8. Didn't hear about compatibility issues with older software though.

Because it's an OEM version.
There were the same issues when XP was first released. All previous software was NT or 9x. XP was supposed to be hybrid that bridged the gap but I don't think it quite achieved that. Four service packs highlight the issues it had.
It will take time but 7 and 8 will surpass XP. I am a little dubious about the short timescale in which Vista, 7 and 8 are being released though and the similarities between Vista and 7. Makes you kind of think that 7 is Vista with SP1 and 8 will be Vista with SP2. Still, we shall see.

XP is still running hard on 4 out of my 5 machines. Will be replacing with new hardware running 7 in the next 6 months or so.
Never really needed to upgrade and the Vista abomination meant I downgraded the PCs bought in that time to XP.

7 is great though and 8 looks promising.
