Today it is showing another option - called 'CRAP wireless' (I'm not kidding here) - but gives no other details about what ...[text shortened]... t any meaningful resuls when searched.

Much appreciated

your network manager will pick up *all* wireless networks that are in its range, not just your one. somebody close to your flat/house/office/whatever, has set up a wireless network, called it 'crap network', and has not switched off its SSID broadcast (which is the mechanism by which the router advertises its presence to the world). this means that you, or anyone else with a wireless network card, can piggyback on the back of their network. i occasionally piggyback on my neighbours wireless network as his ADSL connection is 2 Mbit, and mine is only 0.5, so i can download my.. artistic etchings.. quicker.

the upshot is it's safe for you to ignore it, it won't do you any harm. what you *should* do, though, is make sure you are not broadcasting your SSID to the world - if you can see someone's network, chances are they can see yours too. switch off the SSID broadcast in your routers wireless config options - usually located at http://192.168.1.1, or similar (the ip address will be in the manual).

cheers for explanation...

I cannot turn off ssid via the configuration options. I am using an inventel network, which is configured via the website url you posted. Does anyone else use this (more specifically on Wanadoo) who can point me in the right direction?

I have done some more reading around this to improve my understanding, it seems that even by not broadcasting SSID this can still be picked up.

I read it at: http://www.wi-fiplanet.com/tutorials/article.php/1457211

cheers
