I have wireless internet, and the 'network manager' has until now only shown my wireless connection as an option.

Today it is showing another option - called 'CRAP wireless' (I'm not kidding here) - but gives no other details about what this is.

I have run updated AV check, adaware, and spybot s&d - all of which say this machine is clear.

Anyone got an idea what this could be? Google/google groups have not brought any meaningful resuls when searched.

Much appreciated

Andy

Could someone have hacked your router?

Are you using encryption on your wireless router? Generally its WEP (also known as WPA i think) or TKIP..

If you're not sure then you probably haven't set it up.. Does your router have a webpage served locally that you can look at. (check http://192.168.1.1 maybe tho it could be a different address, read manual) It should tell you everything you need to know..

It sounds like someone else is using your wireless connection and messing around.

I have WEP but it is a fixed code, it was printed on the box and is not something I can change to my knowledge. I wish I could.

How did you know the page I needed to visit would be that one - is that a standard for wireless? It says I need a password so I better see if I can get one from the instructions.

Very confused but Thanks for help so far...

Without going into needless details, basically any ip address that starts with 192.168.*.* is for local networks and 192.168.1.1 is the webpage for my wireless router so i just guessed that it might be the same for yours..

Hmm, this idea of having a WEP key writted on your box is strange but i don't really know that much about Wifi.. Did you set it up yourself?

Now, i would presume that theres a default password for the webpage that you're now looking at (prob mentioned in the manual) If some bozo next door had a wireless laptop, saw your network, connected to this page you are looking at and knew the default admin password for 3com router (for eg) maybe he was able to get your WEP key too and access the internet using your connection? (i'm guessing here btw)

Best action is get access to this webpage and maybe change your WEP key.. note, once you do this you'll lose internet access until you update the client program or WEP details on your pc..

Let me know how u get on.

Best thing to do, depending on your make of router (i have netgear) is turn off broadcast ssid, and only allow certain ip addresses of what you want to connect. IE laptop, other pc etc. That way only those allowed can access your wireless, otherwise some smartass might just sit outside your house and log on.

Actually.. i don't think anyone would be able to get access to that webpage without the WEP key in the first place so scrap what i said..

So yeah, just get access to that webpage and see what it says about encryption, whats enabled etc..

Then maybe think about making a change (but read instructions first).

It is straigh from the box plug 'n play wireless internet. I was sceptical about using it, but it means I cna play PS2 online als.

Anyway. so I've got into the page to configure the settings. I really can't tell what I should and shouldn't change though, so will leave it as is for now.

The 'CRAP Wireless' option is still on my Wireless Network Manager, I am half tempted to disconnect my regular service and try to connect through CW to see what happens... could be a bad move though.

In the settings/setup part of the router you should have a "who is connected" selection. If you click on that it will tell you what computers are connected at the time of checking. Also change the password and username. And WRITE THEM DOWN 😉

uh huh.

It looks like only my computer is connected. Even though my PS2 is hooked up aswell, this doesn't show.

Cheers for advice from you both.

I am still confused as to what the 'CRAP Wireless' is but at least I understand the config of the wireless box a bit better.

Andy

P.s. - Amzingly the offending entry has now gone following a re-boot. How strange.
