wireless network problem

I am trying to get a wireless network set up on a Windows XP machine.

I ran the wireless network setup wizard, which asks me to plug a USB drive in, which I did, and then plug it into the router, then back into the machine.

Unfortunately, the router does not have a USB port. I tried using the manual option, but that said I had to enter settings directly into the router!? I know the WEP key and tried entering that (into the wizard) but to no avail. And, guess what? I've lost the instructions. Any help would be much appreciated.

Windows is a pain. The computing community should all buy Macs, which have a decent operating system.

What is your problem?

What brand of device do you have? usually the walk through instructions can be found somewhere on the internet.
Is it a USB wireless network card? I'm not familiar with a USB drive for networking, nor have heard of plugging the router directly into the pc via a USB port.. (but.. I have an older wireless router.. maybe there is something new out there I haven't used.. )

It's a Belkin network card that plugs into the PCI slot. The router is by 3Com. You don't plug the router into the pc, you are supposed to (while you are running the wizard) save the network settings onto a USB flash drive, then plug the drive into the router, thus alerting it to the network settings and possibly adding more information to tell the pc, then plug the flash drive back into the pc.

Ha! The 3Com knowledge base gives me ------- a BLANK page headed 'setup and installation'. Great. 😠

I should point out that it is already set up and working, I just cant get the pc to communicate with it/vice versa.

I use netgear myself, I have an mr814, just downloaded newest
driver, it hooks up to PC through Cat 5 connection on main comp
then small PCI cards with antennas on them. It used to work fine
but lately it acts as if the output of the 814 is very low, am having
problem connecting to a pc in a room across the hall! open doors
and its maybe 20 feet away from the 814. Been having this problem
for awhile, worked fine when it was new and didn't have to do any
of that USB port crap. I sent an email to netgear support but its only
been since friday so can't expect much till monday or tuesday.
Its like the RF out of the 814 has gone down to nothing.
I have a recording studio based on a PC in my music room and
used two differant PCI wireless cards on it but no net there for
a few weeks. The comp upstairs had net yesterday but not today.
Can't figure it out yet.
For your rig it sounds a bit bizarre to have to go thru USB port to
stick info in and then to the PCI card or router, especially if there
is no USB port, something wrong there, maybe wrong users manual?
Can you get on internet with wired connection temporarily and go to
the 3com site and look for manuals, drivers, etc?

are you sure the router isn't faulty. I struggled for 7 days with a new Netgear router only to find outthat is was broken.

You haven't added any new wireless or cordless devices in that room recently have you that could be causing interference.

Well, the knowledge base has been repopulated with knowledge. Wasn't particularly useful though.

BUT...

I got it working!

I discovered that although I had installed the software from the CD for the network interface card, windows didn't think I had and it said there were no drivers installed. So I worked out the trick, which is to insert the CD during the add hardware wizard. So it turns out Belkin are at fault for not putting the drivers in the right place when they are installed. Or maybe it's Microsoft for being too dumb to make their crappy OS search properly. But it's probably just me for not being the world's foremost expert on every last bloody detail of information technology.

That might have something to do with your CD rom.
I notice when I put in a prog sometimes the CD rom fires up only
to stop for some reason. Then I push the eject and put it back in
and lo and behold, it starts loading. Not sure what thats all about.
Seen it on several comps though.
BTW about the router not working, I think thats the problem.
Last night I futzed with it for about 30 min. and saw the network
icon going from network unavailable to working and back and forth,
it seems very sensitive to the position of the router antenna,
but they aren't that far apart, finally found a position the wireless
card liked. At least last night! The m2814 is getting a bit long in the
tooth now anyway, maybe time for a new one.

I don't think it was to do with my CDROM drive. It worked ok and brought up the autorun to install the software. Maybe it didn't install it to the right place.

I think my router might be a bit dodgy as well, the network went down today, and only came back up when I re-confirmed the router's settings. 🙁
