what's the use of having a state and national if anyone can enter the state?
The idea of having state and nationals are that if somone won the state, he will try and go to as many states as possable to eliminate his some of his compitition at the nationals. Also some states dont have alot of banjo players, if they limit to just the residents of the state, they may send a begginer player to the nationals, and the big guys dont want to waste time with them. That would be my guess

Thanks everyone for the luck, Unfortunately I lost miserably, came like 4th place, I didn't even win my Wyoming competition, 1st place came from WY, second from Boulder CO, and third place from Pennsylvania. The judge hinted to me that I should ve played easier songs, instead of playing hot songs like I did, I made two major mistakes when trying to do some ...[text shortened]... to go to the nationals, he got some money, My sister videoed that, I may post the link of it.
