The FIDE events beginning in 1997 were played with over 100 players at faster time controls in a knockout format.this has to be a very big room to house 100 people. do you know what type of heating they used if any? maybe they didn't have any which may be the reason why they played 'fast' games... to keep warm. personally i think these types of chess tournaments favour those who are already acclimatized to the colder temperatures and in a way it is unfair. i.e. a litlte tropical island playing father christmas and his elves on the icy plains of the south pole.
maybe all major chess tournaments should contain an incubation period where all competitors live in a room together for a period of 3 months so when they battle on the board we do find out the 'real' winner. what do you think JoniG... does it make as much sence to you?
