I thought in American football offensive linemen could batter opposing players trying to get to their quarter back or running backs.

True, but you may not be playing the same man you did the last change, never know who you will be facing. The object or part of it is to protect the quarterback, but still sacks happen. You get yard penalties like 10 or 15 depending on the infraction. Either losing ground or gaining it. Now Basketball would be a man on man game, and even that is hard to do.
