I have a good friend that is possibly donating a kidney to another friend. To me that shows what kind of a person my friend is.
It brought to mind the question, would I do the same thing myself.
My kidneys may not be very healty, but say they were, would I do that to save someone else? I still don't know.

urban legend has it that giving up a kidney takes about 7 years off your own life.

Yeah, but those years come off the end of your life, and those years suck anyway. 😕

Those will be my nursing home years. I'm OK with skipping those. Yeah, I'd give a kidney to a friend. I had one who was in dialysis a lot and eventually died of scleroderma. If a kidney would have helped, I would have given one up.

I aint givin' up no kidney. If they couldn't take care of their own then why should I give them mine?

Right. Because body parts only stop working due to user error.

Then only if it wasn't because of them being unhealthy, which isn't the case probably 90% of the time.

I have never met a healthy person who had organ failure unless they were really old, but giving a kidney to an old person would be like investing in a business that is filing for bankruptcy.

I'd like to think I would but I doubt it.

I'm too squeamish about these things.
I hate needles and nurses, I don't even give blood.

Ditto 🙂

My ex-husband and his brother, both had chronic renal failure. Born with kidney problems. Thankfully, they've both had Kidney transplants, but were both well into their 50's. There were a lot of years of haemo dialysis and peritoneal dialysis.

An honest answer, and It echos my own thoughts.
I doubt I could do it myself. Being diabetic, my own kidneys may not be in good shape, and not worth donating. Even if they were healthy, I doubt I could do it.
