Anyone have experience with x box live?

My kids want me to hook them up with x box live for their birthday.

I checked on wireless network adapter from x box and they are $100! Wow!
Can I accomplish the same thing with a generic wireless USB adapter?

I have a DSL modem in the office and it has an antenna out of it so I'm sure it has wireless capability.

Maybe I should just get another DSL modem?

I had experience with it with the original Xbox. I used a regular ol' DSL modem and router. I just plugged the Xbox into the router with an ethernet cable. Were I you, I'd stick with the hard wired option if it exists.

Foil hats are cheap, effective and infinitely more fashionable.

This only works if you have no hair on your head.

If you are serious about using XBox Live (gaming, rather than downloading) then it is best not to use wireless anyway. Can you not hang a bit of string from your router to your Xbox? The results will be better, and it will be way cheaper.

Another alternative to wireless is to route your LAN traffic over your house power cables. Probably worth doing some research on that though, because I have no experience of doing it myself. [late edit : don't insert cat5 cables into mains sockets kids - devices exist to make this work! 🙂 )

The main goal would be to play against/with their friends.

The problem is, the DSL modem is downstairs and hooked up to the computer, it does have a wireless gateway.
The X-box is upstairs, though there is a phone hook up next to it. I think I would have to get a second modem to tie into the phone line. Or get a wireless adapter. Ugh!

I think I will settle for calling over an extremely handsome, I mean handy computer guy to check my connection!
