Originally posted by sundown316From the way you make it sound, one would think the Red Sox are missing the playoffs altogether. And anyway, clinching the playoffs in the final four days of the season, when at one point you had a 10.5 game lead, is nothing to be proud of. An 8-11 record against Boston is nothing to be proud of.
Bernie Williams hits a 2 run walkoff homer in the 9th, to win 6-4,and clinch the AL East for the 7th year in a row. Been to this party before,Boston?
We'll see you in the ALCS, I'm sure.
Let me tell you a family story. I'm a bit young to remember my father's father.... He passed on when I was about 2? I hear from my older cousins how he was a big Sox fan. Our family always has been, and it probably goes back to my grandfather's uncle or something... or further?
Anyway. My grandfather never got the chance to see the Sox win it all. Our whole family would be much better off if the Sox pull this one off.
I ask Pedro to think of my daddy, my daddy's daddy... and my daddy's daddy's daddy's uncle when he pitches in game 2 of the playoffs.
Do it for my Daddy's Daddy, not your Daddy Pedro!!
Other than that, Schilling should win the other games.

Perhaps the Whole of Red Sox Nation... Stretching coast to coast and to points unknown!
Yankees have a lot of parties.... but the Sox fans are going to have something special to remember for another 100 years or so!

The fact that the Sox came charging back and made it a race again, to me makes a tremendous statement.

Originally posted by no1marauderI don't seem to remember them being up by quite that many. Maybe 5 games. But in any case, the Yankees caught, and then greatly surpassed, the Red Sox because for a little over 3 months, they played essentially .500 baseball. And why did they play .500 ball? Because their defense was attrocious. So Epstein made some moves at the trade deadline to get them the players they needed to vastly improve their defense, at the same time making a minute sacrifice on offense. Give the new players time to adjust to life in Boston and playing in the American League, and all of a sudden the Red Sox become the hottest team in baseball. But alas, the 10 1/2 game lead was just too much to overcome. As well it should be; if the Yankees can't hold that big a lead that late into the season, they shouldn't get out of the first round.
