Yes, your right there Rene. Did you go to Uni in Ireland? The THE-QS top 500 is an independent measure and "The “Times Higher Education-Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings” is heavily focused on reviews by academics, which account for 40 percent of an institution’s score. A survey of employers contributes 10 percent. The rankings also consider the faculty-student ratio, the proportion of international faculty members and international students, and the number of citations per faculty member".

Which, of course, makes it so?

This is a widely respected measure and I am not aware of a better one for measuring a Universities worth. Perhaps you can recommend one?

Top 500 means top 41.67% of the universities measured. Hate to break your bubble.

Ireland is a great country, though.

Just the one 1 I believe, 🙁 Trinity College Dublin in 49th and University College Dublin is 108th I think. It is quite competitive as you can imagine! This of course is only a measure of how efficient a country produces a top 500 Uni. The number of US and UK Uni's is really quite amazing.
Germany has two top 100 Unis's (HEIDELBERG Universität in 59th and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München in 93rd). Germany has a top 500 Uni for every 1.96 million people.

I don't see you point? Portugal has no top 100, 200 or 300 Universities but it was a very poor country, like Ireland, for a long time so there are other factors at work here. I was in Lisbon last week and very nice 😲)

Aye, seven in the Republic of Ireland and also two in Northern Ireland. This is quite a high ratio for a small population (see previous posts).

But there only the other day, Mary Harney declared that she was holding back a due vaccination program against cervical cancer for 12 year olds till 2010.....swings and roundabouts, i guess 😛
