Prokofiev's Classical Symphony is also more than mere pastiche.
Since Rachmaninov is my favorite pianoconcerto composer, I have to add a symphony of him too: the 2nd.

Rachmaninoff Symphony Number 2 is by far my very favorite!

Shostakovich's Tenth every time.
On a Shostakovich-related question, does anyone know which symphony the Alexander Kerensky theme music from Eisenstein's October is from?
I don't know. I await the answer.
Do you know what famous American symphony served as the trailer theme to the Sci Fi picture Alien?
It was Howard Hanson's Romantic Symphony (#2). After all the Alien mayhem the peacefulness of Hanson's theme was a most fitting conclusion. I suspect the number of people who recognized it I could probably count on one hand.
But if you ever see it again listen closely to the lovely theme as Ripley is headed back home free from all the horrors of the Alien.
Better yet go buy Howard Hanson's Romantic Symphony.
