My Xmas break has started (Early too - boss sent me home for good
behaviour 🙂 ) Anyway, this holiday is a time where I plan to spend a
large amount of time eating & drinking, playing with my son, watching
movies, and significantly, coding enhancements on RHP (Not all at the
same time, you understand)

So, top 10 wants (in a concise wish list) If anything comes out clearly
in demand, I should be able to get to it sharpish...

Over to you...

1. That Russ looks back at all the suggestion I've made to save me
having to make yet another list... 😉

2. Ability to click a single button in order to archive all completed
games rather than all that tedious box checking. Or perhaps
something in the settings that says 'Automatically archive all
completed games after x days'.

3. Somebody (was it Harri?) mentioned that they'd like to be able to
make game notes when it wasn't their turn. I don't have time for
notes myself but it seems like a good idea for those that do.

4. A skip game feature that works... 😉

5. A new way of caculating MAP that takes into account the number of
different opponents being played. Less weighting should be given to,
say 30 simultaneous games between the same two people. (No
names, no pack drill 😉)

6. To have the mysterious 'moving without clicking the move button'
bug sorted out.

7. On the occasions when there is no one moving in my games... yes
it does happen!... to be able to play against Rival chess with the same
excellent board and pieces that I see on RHP.

8. Castling available icon as previously suggested.

9. Having to send across a move to be used in the event of your
opponent refusing your draw request - to save time. By the way, does
the move history make any record of when and how many times a
move has been offered?

It's not concise. And it's not 10. I did try though to keep it short!
Sorry 😳 I'll put this post up for moderation so it can be removed it it's
felt to be too long.

1. A corrected skip game feature

2. Prevention of non-pawnstars from accessing the forums altogether
would be a mistake. I do think though that some kind of restricion
would work wonders. I honestly believe that the number of people who
read the forums is way, way bigger than would perhaps be thought of
given the very small number who post. By restricting non-pawnstars
from reading say 50% of the threads, or stopping them reading
threads once there are more than 5 posts in them could well help in
getting more people to subscribe.

3. An icon in a player's profile (and the ability to search for all people
with that icon) which indicates how fast a player they are. This is a
correspondence site first and foremost but I have little doubt that a lot
of the people who complain about slow play would stay at the site and
be happy with the site if they just knew who were fast players and the
right players to play for them. This was mooted before I think and
would be a real boon for those wishing to play people who enjoy
playing quickly.

4. I'd LOVE to see more infomation about a player's rating. Specifically
the average of the rating of the opponents that they have played.
That way I can see if on average I am playing opponents of a 1500
rating or whatever. I think this would be very interesting indeed.

5. The move number in game history to be realigned so black's first
move isn't called move 2. From then it's always a half-move off.

6. An overhaul of the open invite. Opportunity to specify a rating
band. Opportunity to specify that you only wish to play players of a
certain speed.

7. Overhaul of the buddy list. Integrate it more into the site.
Automatic acceptance of a challenge from someone on your buddy
list, regardless of what number you have set in "your settings" about
maximum number of games (the game could still be deleted of
course, there'd be no compulsion to play just because that person is
on your buddy list).

8. Pre-set boards. Say half a dozen (or more if possible) boards set
up in standard opening positions for those who want to play a
particuar opening. This could be integrated into the open invite bit too.

9. The ability to email more than one game at a time. To have the
games in standard, correct, PGN format that can be read by any PGN
viewer/software.

10. A search facility in the forums.

11. The ability to make notes when it's not your turn.

12. Team tournaments. Also, league tournaments. I'm not sure how it
would work exactly but it would be very cool to have 3 or 4 different
RHP leagues with promotion and relegation between each league.

13. Only 10 were asked for and I've already gone over. Also they were
meant to be concise. So apologies for the next bit. I don't know
whether it's welcome or not (I do apologise Russ) but I do get quite
worked up about the forums. So I am sorry about the length.

I am convinced that for RHP to succeed and attract subscribers then a
healthy, frequently posted in forum is essential. Absolutely vital in
fact.

a) Advertise the forums more. Try and get people to go to the forums
more.

b) I wholeheartedly believe that the Only Chess forum should be at
the top of the list in an attempt to make it the "main/central" forum.
The invigoration of this forum could play a key part in getting people
to subscribe. If there is lots of help going on, games being posted
with annotations etc then I think new users would be VERY much
attracted to joining RHP. I think people are put off from posting due
to the cliquey nature of the General forum. New people to the site are
here because they like chess. And yet nobody talks about chess. This
is in great contrast with other chess sites which have forums. In nearly
every other site I've seen the "on topic" forum is where people start
posting and then they move to the other forums. At the moment
people see the drivel (yes, a lot of it perpetuated by me) in the
General forum and then don't bother with the forums from then on.
Many other chess sites have a very active, very interesting chess
forum with lots of discussion, games being posted, analysis, lots of
chess puzzles. Ours is a graveyard [despite the best of efforts of
Rein, David Tebb (when he posted an interesting game), Dave (when
he was here - come back soon big guy) and maggoteer].

c) A moderator's forum. This would hardly get used I shouldn't think
but when the next tuco comes along or when there are posts of a
dubious nature (one about Father Christmas and his sack in recent
weeks I felt was inappropriate) there needs to be discussion of what's
allowed and what's not. At the moment I have no idea who all the
other moderator's are. You get the situation where a post is put up for
moderation, it gets moderated, then another moderator comes along
and accepts it. This has only happened once or twice recently but as I
say, by the time the next tuco comes there needs to be a better
system in place.

d) A read only forum for announcements and rules and information. At
the moment important posts by Chris and Russ announcing a new
tournament or how to pay for subscription if you haven't got a credit
card get lost. By having a read only forum Chris and Russ would be
able to make a post about how to put a photo in your profile, about
how to pay when you haven't got a credit card and so on in a place
where people will see it. Sort of a more detailed FAQ area.

e) Anything, absolutely anything which gets people to post more. Once
you start posting on a site's message board you feel more a part of
that site. Anyone in that position then is far more likely to subscribe.

f) A read only hall of fame. For threads which are particularly funny or
interesting or where there's been a really good debate. Hardly ever
happens I know so there wouldn't be many threads or posts in it but it
would be interesting for non-pawnstars to view it and see the kind of
community there is. It would act as a sort of showcase to show non-
pawnstars/new users some very good threads and good posts. They
may feel more attracted to the site = money for Chris and Russ = the
site goes from strength to strength.

OK forget that then 😉

10. I'd like games in which I have just been check mated / my draw
offer has been accepted or my opponent has resigned to come up for
viewing (just once after completion) along with my other games
waiting. This is because these games are easily lost in the midst of
many other completed games and it's easy to miss out on my
opponent's final message.

I'd go along with all of Andrew's suggestions. Especially

Didn't there used to be a way of playing Rival? Way back. The "user"
was called Rival Online or something. Or have I been dreaming
again?! I'd like this too, but perhaps the games would have to count
as unrated.

I'd like to see beside each thread how many "views" (from different
users) it has had.

How about a list of all the Pawn Stars and one of
all the pepole who joined in the last two days?

And can the site automatically take T/Os unless
the opponent is on vacation mode? if the opponent is
on vacation mode than the user would have to do it
manully.

10a. I know I could use the site map pull down thingy - but could we
have a direct link from the playing screen to the forums.

My mistake. It's already possible to do 10 at a time

With the change in draw offer, you cannot exchange messages anymore without moving. This was a useful feature in training games. An alternative messaging method, not impacting the TO period but other than with the move would be very valuable. Gilbert.

I think what Gilbert is wanting is the ability to send messages back and forth with an opponent at any time during a game, regardless of whose move it is.
