As many who have been here a while will have noticed, many newbies often ask the same old questions. The new "threadid" links make it far easier to send people to an old thread with whatever they need to know but this still means finding a thread with the details they require.
How about we keep this thread updated with links to the most often asked questions and answers. Then its just a case of linking to this thread where the user can then find the answer they require.
Either post a link to a usefull thread and give a little description of what is explained or a small explanation on how to do something which is asked often.

Different URLs
You may find different URLs posted around the site which are not the one you personally use - be aware that the following are all links to this site (just under a different guise):
www.redhotpawn.com
www.redhotchess.com
www.timeforchess.com
www.playtheimmortalgame.com
www.chessatwork.com
There are possibly more than these - feel free to add the others as you see fit.
{part of the chuff to be removed}
ok its starting to look like this thread may get linked to from the current sticky thread. and it looks like the thread may get closed between updates so that it doesnt become corrupted. (and all the chuff will be removed).
if anyone has any further suggestions once the thread has closed please let me know and i shall try to get them added.
in the mean time we need to add some of the other obvious ones - any other suggestions?

There's also a Greasemonkey script (see above) which does these for you.

... try reading the FAQ

This being the case I think we should compile a list of information which we feel needs to be added to the FAQs.
So far Ragnorak has provided a good "Upload Avatar" instruction (see Thread 52809) and we have found a couple of others in this thread already:
Formating and link codes (updated by Nordlys - twice)
Using The Vacation Flag
I am not sure how Russ would be about linking to stuff outside the site from the FAQ (i.e the greasemonkey and redhotfaces) but these could also be put forward as a "Recommended Sites" idea and see what Russ thinks.
If anyone has any other suggestions then please post them in here. They could be full descriptions and/or instructions, simple ideas of what you feel would be worth adding or even edits to the current FAQ content. Two I have found are:
~ The "Moves of the Pieces" page has a link to the en passant rule for pawns but does not have not one to the castling rule for the king.
~ The "How do I castle?" FAQ can be removed now that there is a full section devoted to it.

P.S. The more we add to this the more often we can give blitzer's response and remind people that the FAQs should be read, but try to remember that the FAQ page does say "The help forum is often a good place to get assistance if you are confused by the rules", so try not to use "Read The FAQs" as a blanket response to everything.
